1979 My First DJ Gig

It was a golden morning in the waning days of June 1979 and I had just turned ten years old. The school year was ending for my grade four class and the promise of infinite summer adventures beckoned. The pending holiday feeling was bittersweet as I also knew that I would soon be moving away to a larger city, leaving behind all the friends and teachers I had ever known.

My teacher announced that for the last day of class we would have a party and students were invited to bring our own music. Most kids had no clue but I was a budding vinyl head having dug through my parents collection of Beatles, Rolling Stones and Frank Zappa many times. Rather than use my dad’s records I came to school ready with my first personally owned vinyl that I had received for my birthday (along with a sweet skateboard) the day before. The album was Jim Croce’s greatest hits which offered a number of potential fourth grade party rockers. Do I play “I’ll Have To Say I Love You In A Song ” for the ladies or maybe go with the superman referencing “You Don’t Mess Around With Jim” for the boys?

The choice was easy for me, when it was my turn to play a song I went full on hardcore dropping Croce’s best hit “Bad Bad Leroy Brown” on the school turntable and letting those kids know what was up. The track went off like a firecracker and my sugar buzzed classmates leaped around the room like wild animals. As all parties do it eventually drew to a close and I bid farewell to my friends, knowing I had left with a bang. It was an awakening moment and I’ve been chasing that fire ever since.

What does it mean?

Acquire the Frequencies – Get Out of Town

After a recent trip to NYC and its many galleries I felt inspired to try something different and away from the computer. Visual collages were a natural choice as much of my music is made by cutting and pasting found sounds in to something new in a similar way.

Zoom in and let your intuition tell you which cryptic message is for you. Conscious Sedation? Let’s Get Weird? Think in 3D? Perhaps your message is in the pictures rather then the words. Only you can decide but remember, when in doubt: Acquire the Frequencies – Get Out of Town!

Revenge of the Acid

The black box on the right is my new x0xb0x acid bass line mofo. The x0x is a DIY Roland TB-303 clone built with the exact same components and a reverse engineered open source schematic. Read more about the x0x and order your own kit at Lady Ada.

x0xb0x

I couldn’t wait to start ripping acid lines through a distortion stomp box so picked up an assembled unit on eBay. Always wanted a TB-303 and the x0x is fucking awesome, I expect to create much evil with this device. First up is this acid tech house banger called Acid Mouse – the 303 sound is like a bendy time machine back to epic rave days of yore but still the future! Check my Soundcloud and Myspace for more of this nasty bass synth action.

Heavy Rep

warriors breakbeat

The lead track from the soon to be released EP of breakbeat and bass operations from Insomniak.

The Night Watch EP is a late night journey through a seedy past and a perilous future captured with long lost lo-fi samples, moody vinyl breaks and warbling vintage synths. More of a mind bender then a dance floor filler but still built on a sold rhythmic foundation.

Take Me to the Rose Garden

This new dubstep track samples heavily from an ill horror movie called Frailty – although the film has mostly flown under the radar since its 2001 release it is def worth checking out.  A father enlists his children to help him destroy demons using magical weapons he has been given by god.  It stars Bill Paxton and the voice of Matthew McConaughey in tense and well acted roles and while the story contains many twists it never loses continuity. Check out the Frailty forums on IMDB after you have seen it for any subtle touches you may have missed, there are many layers of detail making a second watching a whole new experience.

Musically this is my first shot at straight ahead dubstep although my bass and breaks productions of the past could still be included within the dubstep realm. It’s also an experiment in the latest Ableton Live which kicks ass so far!
