Insomniak is the late night alter ego of Paul McFetridge, a Canadian electronic music producer, DJ and graphic designer. Paul began playing live and throwing parties in western Canada back in the day and is now based in the heart of Montreal where he makes music, spins records and designs t-shirts, shoes, skate decks and web sites.
Paul has been kicking out twisted beats since 1990 ranging from industrial experimentation through banging rave performances, DJ sets, radio shows, remixes, netlabel releases and vinyl records. His current preference is for dense layers of emotive sounds, chopped breaks, evil bass and a cinematic storytelling approach to sets and tracks.
Constant throughout his evolution Insomniak has utilized the magic of classic analog gear and an ear for unusual sample sources to craft his unique auditory hallucinations. Current favorite analog synths are his Korg MonoPoly and Moog Prodigy and for samples vintage radio programs are providing some choice lines.
Paul has also ventured into creating music for television programs including breakbeat theme songs and cues for MTV’s “Blame Game” and “Crush” on the USA Network as well as station ID beats for the new channel “MTV Jams”. Insomniak tracks have also been heard on CBC televison’s “ZED TV” and “Nerve” as well as four independent student films.
